Wear Sunglasses

Sunlight contains high-energy visible (HEV) light, which can cause long-term damage to your eyes when exposed for too long. Over time, exposure to these rays can lead to eye conditions such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

Sunglasses are designed to absorb or reflect UV radiation before it reaches your eyes. They provide a physical barrier between your eyes and the outside environment, helping block harmful UV rays. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection is key to preventing long-term vision problems caused by HEV light exposure.

Additionally, polarized lenses are highly recommended if you spend extended amounts of time outdoors in bright light. Polarized lenses reduce glare off reflective surfaces like water and concrete, making them ideal for activities such as skiing and driving on sunny days. This further reduces the amount of UVA/UVB radiation that reaches the eyes.

Plus, dark-tinted lenses may also reduce eye strain brought on by harsh overhead lighting or computer screens during prolonged periods of work or play.

Scheduling regular eye checkups is an important step to preserving good vision and preventing long-term vision problems. During a comprehensive eye exam, your optometrist will assess the health of your eyes, as well as your overall visual acuity and peripheral vision.

In doing so, they can identify any potential signs of degenerative eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts before they significantly impact your quality of life.

Adults need to get their eyes checked at least once every two years to spot early signs of disease or damage, which could pose a risk for long-term impairment. Some additional tests that may be performed include fundus examination, refraction testing, and slit lamp evaluation.

These tests can pick up any refractive errors or disease in the earliest stages, when treatments may still be effective in reversing some of the permanent damages associated with certain conditions.
