Encourage Healthy Adult Eyes With These Three Eye Care Tips
As you age, eye disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, and dry eye disease emerge and these are treated at an eye care center. However, you only get one set of eyes in your life so the more eye care tips you use, the longer your eyesight remains sharp as you age. These three eye care tips are all examples of small actions you can take to ensure your eyes remain as healthy as they can be.
Avoid Bad Lighting
As more people work from home, bad lighting while working is one impediment to healthy eyes. Bad lighting is any type of light source which causes eye strain and headaches. It may be that the lighting is reflecting into your eyes or it may be lighting which is to low for your surrounding and this causes your eyes to strain to make out the words on your computer screen. When working from home, seek a spot with natural light or use a soft, white light that is positioned so it does not create glares on your computer monitor.
Eye Health Diet
Making changes to the types of food you eat is another way to encourage healthy eyes. Foods such as fish that contain Omega-3 fatty acids, carrots which contain beta-carotene and Vitamin A, and fresh fruit containing antioxidants are all beneficial to your eyesight. Try to add one of these food sources into your daily menu and if you find that change does not agree with your palate, then consider a daily vitamin created with the eyes in mind.
Beware The Glare
Every time you step outside on a sunny day you must arm yourself with a pair of sunglasses. If sunglasses are not an option because you wear everyday glasses, then consider getting a pair of prescription sunglasses or get your everyday lenses changed to transition ones that darken as you head outside into the sun. UV rays from the sun are harmful to your eyes. Additionally, bright sunlight creates glare which causes your eyes to squint. Neither of these factors are good for your eyes long-term so find a sunglass option that works well for you and use it every time you leave the house.
Finally, make sure you have an annual appointment at your local eye care center to get your eyes tested. At this time you can discuss eye changes and any eye health concerns you have. This ensures that any fixable problems are found early on which makes treatment options more effective.
